History

IT Mill Ltd. was founded in year 2000 to develop the next generation technology for web applications. The founding idea was to bring proven best practices and technology from the desktop to the web in order enable the use of browsers for business applications that required desktop application in the past; to make development a lot easier and to make maintenance radically more cost-effective when compared to the other web technologies.

The mission of the company doesn't end to the technology, we live to ensure that our customers get the best possible web applications that support their business growth. From the beginning, the company has provided a wide variety of services to fulfill this mission: from training the software companies in applying our technology to building complete solutions that make a difference in many lines of business. Even though our services are horizontally focused around designing and building user experience, many of the solutions have been created for healthcare, public sector, energy and financial sectors. 

The first open source product, Millstone 3 web framework was released in year 2002. Millstone made it possible for Java developers to easily create more maintainable web applications without learning new web technologies at all. Later Millstone introduced an Ajax based client communication and rendering engine. By the end of year 2007 the proprietary JavaScript technology was abandoned and Google Web Toolkit was integrated on top of the server-side components. At the same time the product license was changed to open source Apache License 2.0. In May 2009, name of the IT Mill Toolkit was changed to Vaadin to emphasize the independence of the open source project from the company.

During the years IT Mill has steadily grown from a small start-up to employ some 40 people with various competencies from world class web technology expertise, design, development, usability and project management to the thing we are the most proud of: Creating stunning business applications that you will enjoy showing and using.

Today, IT Mill continues to focus on further development of Vaadin; offers professional support and development services alongside the open source development tools and builds complete solutions that make a difference in your business, for you.
