Fakta writes: Open Source changes IT companies' business model and has a profound impact on their marketing and management as well.
"Businesses can operate profitably by developing commercial products and services based on their own free open source products", IT Mill CEO, Joonas Lehtinen explains in Fakta-magazine. "It would be very expensive to achieve this kind of business model by traditional marketing. The global developer community helps the company or organization behind the open source to succeed."
The developer community's support has meant a lot for Vaadin, IT Mill's open source Java framework for building web applications.
"In turn, to support the developer community we started our own 'Community Friday' last fall. IT Mill's employees have the right to spend 10 % of their working hours in developing new ideas that promote our open source products - with no demands for profit or gain.", Mr Lehtinen continues.
